Neighbors

Some neighbors can be a little crazy and demanding. Many of us have these neighbors. In fact, many of us have quite a few and one of ours is named Austin! No, not the city...the 10 year old boy. In an average week Austin will usually need 3-4 kinds of food. He'll need to use the phone everyday and locks himself out a few times a week. He also needs to be taken to the playground every time we go and a ride to school everyday. We also attend his parent-teacher conferences with him and take him to every after school activity. On the other hand, he is a fairly nice boy and we enjoy him although he can be a bit overwhelming and demanding. Today, however, has been special. It included the normal rides to and from school along with whatever we will be eating...but when he went to his house he returned a minute later screaming that someone was in his house and I needed to call the police. I asked him what he was talking about and he told me all the screens were off the windows and the slippers on the porch had moved and the dead bolt was bolted and he hadn't locked them that day. Hmmmmm.....it took a little while to calm him down and then to calm down all of my children who were now pretty upset. Then I had to convince him that it was probably the wind that had done the damage (the gusts have been really high today, my other neighbor had some of his roof come off). Then I took a knife with me (just in case) and rang on the doorbell. His sister answered and he was able to go home and I was able to return to my now over anxious children.
About an hour later I get another pounding of the door. "MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE." Well, I didn't think I should quiz him for very long just in case it was on fire so I run across the street with Seth in my arms and my phone just in case I need to call 911. I yell at the kids to stay in the yard. When I get to the door the smoke is just pouring out and another neighbor runs in to check. It was a grease fire on the stove and he brought out the pan. Of course, Austin and his sister Miranda are literally in a state of panic. I open up all the windows and doors and then talk to their mom to reassure her the house is not on fire and tell her that the damage is pretty minimal. Have to get the smoke detectors turned off which took awhile. Now back to crowd control. Austin and Miranda are in tears still screaming and panicking. My boys are upset and Seth really wants to play with their dog. I assure Miranda (who is very sweet and quiet) that it will be okay and convince Austin that his parents won't kill them. Then I assure my boys everything will be okay. Now Austin is back and ready to play :) The sad part is I have had much more dramatic afternoons with Austin. This is probably just moderate. Also, anyone who smells me at Enrichment tonight will know that I wasn't actually smoking. Perfume anyone!

How to tell a child is growing up...

We say it all the time, "You're such a big boy..." but when is a little one really big? Is it when a child starts to walk, maybe when they learn to go potty. Perhaps it is when they can put on their own clothes. These are all signs that you almost have a "big boy" on your hands but I submit a new criteria...how does the child handle his/her stuffy nose. Apparently one major difference between adults and children is the amount of snot they will let roll down their face. I have been conducting an experiment the last two weeks! At age 7 children do not like stuffy noses, they can blow their nose and can even use a tissue or at least sniff it up with a horrific sound. At 5 they are almost there but every once in awhile they lose their new found "adult" reasoning! Little ones that are 3 and 1 years old have two methods of getting rid of snot. They have developed these methods because they absolutely refuse to let anyone else wipe their nose. The first one is to wipe their nose on you or themselves. This is commonly accomplished by running up and grabbing you will all their strength. The other method is to not bother with it till it hits the mouth and then just try and lick or eat whatever gets there. Of course, they are both nasty and I advise a person experimenting with little boys and stuffy noses to wear darker colors and not very nice clothes! With this new definition we are about half big in our house and half small. However, if you throw in the ability to control your saliva (ie don't spit when you talk) then there is only one big person in the house....ME.

President Hinckley Dies...

Yes, I should be asleep because I am still very sick but my parents called about an hour ago to tell us that President Hinckley had passed away. A sweeter, better man the world has never known. I know he was deeply loved by all of us and his counsel, insight, guidance, leadership, kindness and spirit will be sorely missed. What a wonderful man, he was truly all of these things...
Be Grateful
Be Smart
Be Clean
Be True
Be Humble
Be Prayer

Salsa

My new favorite treat is this Sam's Choice Black Bean and White Corn salsa at Walmart. I acknowledge that there are probably better salsas out there then a Walmart brand but you can't beat the price. Anyway, I have been so freezing with my high fever that I didn't want to eat it because it was cold in the refrigerator. Then I though why don't I just heat it up...I need vegetables in my diet! So I zapped a bowl to a nice slightly warmer than room temperature and enjoyed! In fact, I might eat it that way everyday. Anyway, point was if you shop at Walmart or Sam's club you should try the salsa.

Repentance....

That is right! I have been called to repentance by Seth. We have been really sick (more to come in the week review) which is why I haven't posted in a bit. Seth too has been sick. As a general rule we consider Seth our most grumpy baby. Josh was pretty bad but Seth takes the cake. He is so grumpy that even loving Grandma Prince and sweet Aunt Paula acknowledge he needs tons of attention. The child is like fire and ice, cute fire and ice, but fire and ice none the less. Anyway, all these 14 months we have been talking about how grouchy and plain stubborn little Seth is. His nicknames include the grumpinator and grumpulstiltskin. A fourth child should not demand this kind of attention. It is like he thinks he is a first child and we don't know what we are doing! So, we have established that Seth is grumpy! However, we discovered this week what it really means for Seth to be grumpy. While he was sick he was SOOOO BAD that is makes his normal behavior seem down right pleasant! We have learned that Seth has actually been making an effort his whole life to be pleasant. We learned that when he doesn't want to be pleasant he can unleash a reign of terror like no other. We now repent and say that Seth is at least trying his best and you can't judge a baby (or anyone) by their grumpiness and we are happy to have our sweet/grumpy Seth back!

Seth's Fifth Tooth

Seth's 5th tooth poked it's way through today. Yes, he is a little slow on the tooth front since most toddlers have a mouth full by now. He has been pretty grumpy and we would like to tell you that it is because he is teething but that would not be accurate. He is grumpy about 60-70% of the time no matter what is happening :)

Query

What is the point of buying 100 Calorie Snack Pack if you eat 2 or 3 of them?
I guess it is just the hope that you will only eat one.

Can you tell we are in graduate school...

We decided that it might be fun to go out as a family to dinner for my birthday. It will be obvious how often we go out to eat when you hear the answer....
We asked the kids where they would like to go out to eat. We said we wanted to go somewhere a little nicer where we would sit down and not just drive through and get chicken nuggets. The ONLY place they could come up with...the church. Yes, that is right people, eating at church activities is what my kids know as nice out to eat dinners!

Week in Review

Seth has dominated this week. On Thurs. he developed some VERY unseemly bowel issues. We still haven't been able to figure out what is the cause of all the blowouts. He hasn't seemed sick and no one else has had bowel issues. Anyway, it is one thing to have up to the armpit blowouts when you are a newborn baby. It is a whole different thing when you are 14 months old! Nasty! Question...how many baths and outfits have you had since Thurs? Well, Seth is at about 15 baths and just as many outfits and one change of sheets. He had 7 baths on Thurs alone! The other problem is that Seth picked the one weekend that is has actually been cold. Due to the fact that we are in Texas I only have a few really warm outfits and they were all gone by 2:00pm on Thurs. Lots of wash the last few days! We finished off the week with Josh getting sick yesterday (just a cold/cough) and Hyrum, John and I getting it today. There is no school tomorrow and Josh is already feeling pretty good so I don't think it will be too bad. We had Josh and Hyrum's science fair and my birthday (which I actually forgot about till my friend asked if I wanted to come to lunch). So pretty much an average week!

My Room and Seth smell very good!

Seth is growing so fast. He is growing so fast that he can now reach things on tables and counters. Today he "reached" some body splash spray that I got from my sister-in-law. Normally one would think that it would be hard for a 14 month old child to press down the spray hard enough to get any out and normally that would be true. However, if you are a creative genius like Seth then you just turn the bottle over and hit it against the floor over and over. It sprays very nicely that way. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. I let him keep going even after I noticed what he was doing because frankly I live with 5 stinky boys and this is the best my room or Seth has smelled in a long time! I just wanted to let you know how clever 14 month old boys are :) He is such a big help!

Wii Boxing

It is a good workout! (Joe and Eldon boxing)

If Only We Could All Be One Year Old...

Yes, Seth's life is more fun than yours...

For Tyson and Sara...

Bionicles and Star Wars - always popular!

The cheers will ring out as we unfold our victory story...

Well...started this mostly to avoid the homemaking trap of not keeping up with technology. You know it is bad when your 3 year old is better at Lego Star Wars then you. Also, when we first got married, I knew more about computers than John and I could do more. Oh.....how that has changed. I also knew about as much Biology/Chemistry as John when we got married. Oh.....how that has changed. Also, we had more similar body types when we got married (before kids). Oh.....how that has changed. On the plus side I am still the better driver!
