Amish Friendship Bread

My brother and sister-in-law gave me a starter over Christmas. Every time I make up the bread it only lasts a day. It makes 2 loaves or 6 little loaves. Today John told me to not give away the starter but use it to make 2 or 3 sets of bread....I would be making 6 loaves ;) He suggested we freeze them and then use them throughout the 10 days we have to wait till the starter is ready again for cooking. Also, apparently we watch too much Food Network because Josh added the suggestion that I make a few different flavors (I have tried a few already) every time I make it and then he, John and Hyrum will sit and I can present different breads for them to judge. He'll call it Iron Chef Bread Challenge...hmmmmm....

PS...On a side note, there is an Iron Chef Wii game coming...I wonder what that will be like.

Awesome! Our bread goes fast too. I added lots of cinnamon and nutmeg on the latest go around; it is pretty good. Speaking of which, I might go grab some now. (And we too have thought about keeping multiple starters so that we could make 4 big loaves instead of 2 lol)...

Iron Chef!! We watch that ALL THE TIME too! We love Batali. He's the MASTAH! I love how he's always so confident and laid back in the kitchen... not to mention that his dishes always look SO GOOD.

Batali is also the funniest at interacting with Alton; I appreciate that about him (although I'll always be a Bobby Flay fan -- I love the spicy stuff).

I did the same thing with my starter... mostly because I was too lazy to find people to give it away to - we tried chocolate cherry, pistachio, lemon poppyseed (with cream cheese filling) and banana cream. I cooked mine in a bundt pan instead of two loaf pans.

My mom has six starters in her refrigerator at all times and makes 12 loaves about once a week. I plan to steal some starter from her and do the same. I never thought of trying flavors of the bread. Even my kids like it just how it is.

Dang Michele...maybe you should share your favorite recipes. My mom sent me a website that has a few on it but I don't know which ones are good.

maybe i'm just stupid - is that the same thing as sourdough bread?

It works on the same idea but I don't think sour dough starters have quite the same amount of sugar.
